Seven year old Japanese girl Sara is torn between her mother’s strict orders never to buy cigarettes for her father again and his dying pleas. Sara sets out on a journey through her neighborhood to get him cigarettes, but when a vending machine swallows her money, she has to approach complete strangers in her attempts to get the elusive last pack. The Errand is the bittersweet story of a little girl’s struggle with her own conscience and her dawning awareness of the difference between right and wrong.
